Pool Types

If you are about to have a concrete pool built, choosing the pool type or system is one of the initial steps in the process. Skimmer pools are the most common choices for residential pools while overflow pools are very common in the commercial world. Those who wish to have a breathtaking visual effect may decide to build an infinity pool.  Here you find all the information you need regarding all these plus additional pool systems.

Basic Pool Types

Skimmer Pools

Skimmer pools are the most popular choice among residential pool owners simple because it is cost efficient and takes up less space in the garden. A skimmer system does not require perimeter drainage; hence, available space can be maximised to build a bigger pool. The function of the skimmer is to vacuum water into the system from the pool’s surface with a skimming action, capturing floating debris: leaves, flower petals, dirt, twigs, dead insects, and oil. The water level is around 6 inches lower than ground level with this system. This is the most common and most affordable system of the basic pool types.

We’ve built commercial swimming pools with skimmer systems (pictures in our gallery) and it works just as well.

An overflow swimming pool design (also referred to as a perimeter-overflow pool, a knife edge swimming pool or a wet edge swimming pool) incorporates the infinity-edge look but is different in design because the water spills over all four sides.  Like the infinity design, the water that flows over the sides of a perimeter-overflow pool is collected in a hidden catch basin and recirculated.

Most of the commercial pools we’ve constructed are overflow pools. Pools with perimeter overflow are excellent for swimming as the overflow prevents the reverberation of waves and has a gorgeous visual impression. This channel is commonly covered up by ABS gratings.

An infinity pool (sometimes also called vanishing-, negative-, zero-, or disappearing-edge pool) is a swimming pool where the water flows over one or more edges, producing an astonishing optical illusion of water with no boundary. Infinity pools are often designed so that the edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, or with the sky.

Though often seen at resorts and in other luxurious places, Infinity pools are captivating homeowners all over the world because of its mystifying, eye-catching appearance. They work wonderfully for homes that are built on a hillside with a view of the ocean. With infinity pool, you can replicate a vacation experience in your backyard. Infinity pools, however, do need more energy to power the recirculation systems that pump overflow water back into the pool.

Green Pool

Green pools are chemical free pool systems commonly built for people who have sensitive skin or are prone to other skin related diseases. In recent years, Aquarius has been increasingly receiving inquiries about chemical-free pools as our customers are looking for a more in depth green experience.

Aquarius now offers two alternative pool options, (1) Natural Pools, for those who love to indulge in their natural surroundings and (2) Salt Water Pools, for those who are reluctant to dip their feet into algae and swim with tadpoles.

A natural pool, which is the image of a natural lake, provides a living space for people, animals and plants and creates the incomparable feeling of swimming in natural water. A natural swimming pool or natural swimming pond (NSP) is a system consisting of a constructed body of water, in which there is no chemicals or devices that disinfect or sterilize water use, and all clarifying and purifying of the

water is achieved through biological filters and plants rooted hydroponically in the system. Natural pools are organic self-cleaning mini-ecosystems with clear chemical-free water divided in two areas – swimming and regeneration. The natural self-cleansing forces ensure a stable hygienically perfect water quality through its micro-organisms and plants.

A natural pool in the tropical climate attracts algae and aquatic macroinvertebrates which are found in all but the most extreme and inhospitable freshwater environments. These macroinvertebrates consists primarily of shrimps, snails, worms and insects. Some insects such as beetles and bugs complete their entire life cycle in the water whereas others include dragonflies, mayflies, and midges have aquatic larval stages and emerge as winged adults that live within the pool environment.

Aquarius has the technological know-how to construct a natural pool and will be glad to comply with your decision to build a natural pool in your home. However, we want to make sure that the pool owner is well informed and makes a thoroughly-thought-through decision taking into consideration that you will share your pool with native plants and animals of your environment.

Salt water pools (salt based sanitizing systems) are also commonly referred to as green pools here in Asia. Salt water pools have small amount of chlorine present in the water but the quantity is lower than chlorine pools and not as concentrated. The salt is turned into chlorine in a safe way (broken down via electrolysis) and added to the pool across the filtration process.

Saltwater systems are gaining more popularity as more and more pool owners are opting for a healthier alternative. Take a dip in a saltwater pool and you’ll understand the reason behind their decision, (1) the overwhelming odour of chlorine is absent, (2) no burning sensation in eyes, (3) salt is easier on hair and it just feels better on skin, (4) salt is cheaper than chlorine, (5) less maintenance is needed and (6) there are no harsh chemicals lying around.

Ionizer is a salt water pool chlorinator replacement system that uses ionization technology to sanitize pool water. It uses natural mineral ions (copper and silver) to transform swimming pools and spas to fresh drinking-quality water - without using chemicals such as chlorine. Ionizer works as a swimming pool purifier for all types of pools and spas whether it is an above ground swimming pool or in-ground pool or spa.

Above ground pools are the most affordable option if you are thinking of scaling down your budget. It is easy to install and remove and can be easily relocated. Most above ground pools are made from pre-fabricated kits installed either by hired professionals or through Do-It-Yourself method.
